Whiplash Treatment — Gentle Chiropractic Care

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nikolay Chernukhin, D.C. · Last reviewed July 2026

A car accident happens in a fraction of a second, but the effects on your neck can last for weeks or months. Whiplash is the rapid back-and-forth “crack of the whip” motion your head makes during a collision — most often a rear-end crash — that overstretches the muscles, ligaments, and joints of the neck. If you were recently in an accident and your neck feels stiff, sore, or simply “not right,” you’re in the right place. Whiplash and auto-injury care is one of our specialties, and we’re here to help you understand what’s going on and feel more like yourself again. We can’t promise a specific outcome, but many patients find that gentle, well-timed care makes the recovery process far more comfortable.

How whiplash feels

One of the most confusing things about whiplash is that the symptoms are often delayed. Adrenaline from the accident can mask pain for hours or even a day or two, so it’s common to feel “fine” at the scene and then wake up the next morning barely able to turn your head. That delay is normal, and it’s one reason we encourage a prompt evaluation even after a seemingly minor fender-bender.

Whiplash can show up in many ways, and it’s rarely just neck pain. Patients commonly describe:

  • Neck stiffness and a reduced ability to turn or tilt the head
  • Aching or sharp pain at the base of the skull and across the shoulders
  • Headaches that often start at the back of the head
  • Muscle spasm or a “tight band” sensation across the upper back
  • Dizziness, fatigue, or trouble concentrating (“brain fog”)
  • Tingling or numbness radiating into the arms

When to seek urgent care first: Whiplash sometimes overlaps with more serious injury. If you have severe or worsening headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, slurred speech, vision changes, weakness in an arm or leg, or you lost consciousness during the accident, please treat it as an emergency and be evaluated at an ER or urgent care right away. Chiropractic care is for the soft-tissue and joint components of whiplash, not for head trauma or fractures.

How gentle chiropractic care may help

Here’s what makes our approach different: we do not use forceful cracking or aggressive twisting. When your neck has just been injured, the last thing inflamed tissue needs is a high-velocity thrust. Instead, Dr. Nikolay Chernukhin uses a gentle, low-force technique informed by how soft tissue actually behaves under stress — the science of tissue rheology. The goal is to restore healthy motion to stiff, guarded joints without startling an already irritated nervous system. We believe “motion is life,” and gently reintroducing safe movement can help the healing tissues remodel properly rather than locking into a stiff, painful pattern.

Whiplash also involves a lot of muscle spasm, which is your body’s protective “splinting” response. That’s where therapeutic massage comes in. Combining gentle chiropractic adjustments with targeted massage may help ease that spasm, calm the guarding, and let the joints move more freely. Many patients tell us the combination feels far more comfortable than either one alone.

What to expect at your visit

Your first visit starts with listening. We’ll walk through exactly what happened in the accident, how you’re feeling now, and what your day-to-day looks like. From there we perform a careful exam — checking range of motion, muscle tone, joint mobility, and neurological signs like reflexes and sensation — so we understand the specific pattern of your injury. If anything suggests you need imaging or a referral, we’ll tell you.

Then we begin gentle care at a pace your body can tolerate, adjusting as you progress. Because auto-injury cases almost always involve insurance and sometimes attorneys, we also document everything thoroughly — your injuries, findings, and treatment — which protects you and supports any claim. You can learn more about our provider on Dr. Chernukhin’s page. He speaks English, Spanish, and Russian, so care is available in the language you’re most comfortable with.

Injured in a car accident? We bill your PIP directly

If your whiplash started after a car accident, you likely have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage on your auto policy — and it typically pays for this kind of care regardless of who was at fault. We bill PIP directly in both Washington and Oregon, so most patients pay nothing upfront. If your case involves a claim or an attorney, we also offer Letter-of-Protection arrangements so you can get care now and settle the billing later. See our car accident injury page for the full picture, and our insurance and billing page for details on PIP, Medicare, and major plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after a car accident should I see a chiropractor?

Sooner is generally better, ideally within the first few days, even if you feel okay. Whiplash symptoms are often delayed by hours or days, and early documentation and gentle care can support both your recovery and any insurance claim. If you have red-flag symptoms like confusion or severe headache, go to an ER first.

Will you crack or twist my neck?

No. We use a gentle, low-force technique with no forceful cracking or aggressive twisting. This is especially important for a freshly injured neck, and it’s a core part of how we practice at both locations.

Do I have to pay anything upfront for whiplash care?

Usually not. We bill your auto PIP coverage directly in both Washington and Oregon, and most patients have no out-of-pocket cost upfront. For claims involving an attorney, we also offer Letter-of-Protection options.

What if my accident was minor — is whiplash still possible?

Yes. Whiplash can occur even in low-speed collisions, because it’s the sudden motion of the head, not the amount of vehicle damage, that strains the neck. A free consultation can help you understand whether an evaluation makes sense for you.

How long does whiplash take to heal?

Every injury is different, so we can’t promise a timeline. Many patients improve over several weeks with gentle, consistent care, while more significant injuries may take longer. We’ll reassess as you go and keep you informed.

You don’t have to guess whether your neck is “bad enough” to get checked. We offer a free consultation, we bill PIP directly, and we’d be glad to help.
