Herniated & Bulging Disc — Gentle Chiropractic Care
Medically reviewed by Dr. Nikolay Chernukhin, D.C. · Last reviewed July 2026
Hearing that you might have a herniated disc — or a bulging or “slipped” disc — can be scary. It sounds serious and permanent. So let’s start with some reassurance: many disc problems improve over time with patient, conservative care, and surgery is often not necessary. Here’s a helpful picture. Each disc between your vertebrae is a bit like a jelly donut: a tough outer ring with a soft gel center. A bulging disc is when that donut flattens and pushes outward; a herniated disc is when the soft center pushes through a weak spot in the outer ring. When that displaced material irritates a nearby nerve, it can cause the pain, tingling, or weakness that brought you here. We can’t promise a specific result, but gentle chiropractic care may help many people manage disc-related pain more comfortably.
How a herniated disc feels
Disc symptoms depend a lot on where the disc is and which nerve it’s affecting. A disc in the lower back may send symptoms down the leg, while one in the neck may send them into the arm. Patients often describe:
- Sharp, shooting, or electric pain that travels down an arm or leg
- Tingling, “pins and needles,” or numbness in a specific area of the limb
- Localized back or neck pain that worsens with bending, sitting, coughing, or sneezing
- Muscle weakness, such as a foot that feels heavy or a weakened grip
- Pain that eases in certain positions and flares in others
Seek emergency care immediately if you experience loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle/groin area, or rapidly worsening weakness in both legs. These are rare but signal a serious condition called cauda equina syndrome, which is a medical emergency, not something to manage with routine care. Please go to the ER right away if these occur.
How gentle chiropractic care may help
You may be wondering: is it even safe to see a chiropractor with a disc problem? It’s a fair question, and it’s exactly why our approach matters. We use no forceful cracking and no aggressive twisting — the kind of movements that can feel risky when a disc is involved. Instead, Dr. Chernukhin uses a gentle, low-force technique informed by tissue rheology, the science of how tissues behave under load. The aim is to reduce irritation and restore gentle, healthy motion around the affected area without provoking the disc or the nerve.
Because we believe “motion is life,” we focus on encouraging safe movement and easing the muscle guarding that so often surrounds a disc injury. That guarding can be intensely painful on its own, and therapeutic massage may help calm the spasm so the area can settle. When the disc is affecting a nerve down the leg, it can also cause sciatica — a closely related pattern we treat regularly with the same gentle philosophy. You can read more about how we work on our chiropractic page.
What to expect at your visit
We begin by understanding your story in detail: where the pain travels, what positions help or hurt, and how it’s affecting your daily life. Our exam includes orthopedic and neurological testing — checking reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation — to map which nerve may be involved and how it’s functioning. This is important, because it tells us whether gentle chiropractic care is appropriate or whether you’d be better served by imaging or a medical referral first. We’re always straight with you about that.
If gentle care is a good fit, we start conservatively and adjust based on how you respond, never rushing. We document everything carefully, which supports both your treatment plan and any injury claim you may have.
If your disc injury came from an accident or your job
Discs can be injured by a single event — a hard lift, a fall, or a car crash — or by wear over time. If your symptoms started after a car accident, we bill your auto PIP directly in Washington and Oregon, so most patients pay nothing upfront, with Letter-of-Protection options available for injury cases; see our car accident page. If it happened at work, our work injury page covers L&I and workers’ comp. We also accept Medicare and most major insurance — details are on our insurance and billing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chiropractor help a herniated disc, or do I need surgery?
Many people with disc problems improve with conservative care and never need surgery, though every case is different and we can’t promise an outcome. Our gentle, low-force approach aims to reduce irritation and restore safe motion. If your exam suggests you need a surgical or medical opinion, we’ll refer you.
Is it safe to be adjusted with a herniated disc?
We use a gentle, low-force technique specifically because forceful cracking and twisting can feel risky with a disc. We screen carefully first and only proceed if it’s appropriate for your situation. If we find red flags, we send you for medical evaluation instead.
What’s the difference between a bulging disc and a herniated disc?
A bulging disc pushes outward while its outer ring stays intact, like a flattened jelly donut. A herniated disc is when the soft center pushes through a tear in that outer ring. Both can irritate nearby nerves, and both may respond to gentle conservative care.
Will chiropractic “put the disc back in place”?
That’s a common myth. A disc doesn’t simply pop in and out like a bone. Gentle care aims to reduce nerve irritation, ease muscle guarding, and restore healthy motion, which may help your symptoms improve over time.
How long until I feel better?
Disc recovery varies widely and can take weeks to months, so we can’t give you a set timeline. Many patients notice gradual improvement with consistent, gentle care. We’ll reassess regularly and keep you informed every step.
