Neck Pain Relief — Gentle Chiropractic Care
Medically reviewed by Dr. Nikolay Chernukhin, D.C. · Last reviewed July 2026
Your neck does a remarkable job. It holds up a head that weighs about as much as a bowling ball, lets you look in every direction, and does it thousands of times a day without complaint — until it starts to hurt. If neck pain or stiffness has crept into your days, making it hard to check your blind spot, sleep comfortably, or focus at work, you’re far from alone. Neck pain is one of the most common reasons people see us, and the good news is that it often responds well to gentle, conservative care. We can’t promise a specific result, but many patients find meaningful relief without drugs, injections, or aggressive treatment.
How neck pain feels
Neck pain rarely reads from a single script. For some people it’s a dull, nagging ache; for others it’s a sharp catch when they turn a certain way. It can build slowly over months of desk work — sometimes called “tech neck” from looking down at screens — or arrive overnight after sleeping in an awkward position. Common experiences include:
- Stiffness that makes turning or tilting the head difficult, especially in the morning
- A deep ache at the base of the skull or between the shoulder blades
- Tension headaches that seem to start in the neck
- Muscle knots or spasm across the upper shoulders (the “traps”)
- A grinding or clicking sensation with movement
- Pain that flares with long stretches of sitting, driving, or screen time
When to seek prompt medical care: Most neck pain is mechanical and not dangerous. But please seek urgent evaluation if your neck pain follows a significant injury or fall, comes with fever and a stiff neck you can’t flex, or is paired with weakness, numbness, or clumsiness in your arms or legs, or any loss of bladder or bowel control. These are uncommon, but they warrant a doctor’s attention right away rather than routine care.
How gentle chiropractic care may help
Much of everyday neck pain comes from joints that have become stiff and restricted, and from the muscles around them tightening up to protect those joints. Over time that creates a frustrating cycle: less motion leads to more guarding, which leads to still less motion. Our philosophy is that “motion is life,” and gently restoring healthy movement can help break that cycle.
What we don’t do is force it. There’s no forceful cracking and no aggressive twisting here. Dr. Chernukhin uses a gentle, low-force approach informed by how tissue actually responds to load, encouraging stiff joints to move again without jarring your nervous system. We also work to address the root cause — posture, workstation setup, sleep position — rather than just chasing the symptom, so relief has a better chance of lasting.
Because so much neck pain is muscular, we often pair adjustments with therapeutic massage to ease spasm in the shoulders and upper back. You can read more about our overall chiropractic approach if you’d like to understand the philosophy before you come in.
What to expect at your visit
We start by getting the full story: when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, how you sleep and work, and what you’re hoping to get back to. Then we examine your neck — checking range of motion, feeling for restricted joints and tight muscles, and screening reflexes and sensation to make sure the nerves are behaving. This tells us whether gentle chiropractic care is a good fit and, if not, what you may need instead.
From there we begin gentle care tailored to what we find, and we often send you home with simple movement or posture tips you can use between visits. We document your findings and progress clearly, which is especially important if your neck pain is connected to an injury claim.
If your neck pain came from an accident or your job
Neck pain doesn’t always come from a pillow or a phone. If your neck pain started after a car accident, you may have whiplash, and your auto PIP coverage typically pays for care — we bill PIP directly in Washington and Oregon, so most patients pay nothing upfront. See our car accident page for details. If it began at work or from repetitive job tasks, our work injury page explains how we handle L&I and workers’ comp claims. We accept Medicare and most major insurance too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is chiropractic safe for neck pain?
For most people with mechanical neck pain, gentle chiropractic care is a reasonable and conservative option. We use a low-force technique with no forceful cracking, and we screen for red flags first. If your exam suggests something that needs medical attention, we’ll refer you rather than adjust.
Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral is needed to schedule a free consultation. If your care is tied to an insurance claim like workers’ comp, we’ll help you understand any requirements your plan has. Just call us and we’ll walk you through it.
Can chiropractic help my tension headaches?
Many patients whose headaches originate in the neck find relief as the neck joints and muscles improve. We can’t promise your headaches will resolve, but gentle care combined with massage may help when the neck is a driver. We’ll reassess your progress as we go.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on how long the pain has been present and what’s causing it, so we can’t give a fixed number. Some patients feel better quickly, while chronic or work-related patterns often take longer. We’ll set expectations together after your exam.
Will you make me keep coming forever?
No. Our goal is to help you feel better and give you tools to stay that way. Many patients transition to occasional visits or self-care once they’re doing well, and that decision is always yours.
